Emotional Intelligence

When it comes to success and happiness in our careers and personal life, Emotional Intelligence matters as much as our technical abilities and Intellectual Intelligence. It is paramount to be aware of our emotions and how they can affect you and people around you.

Emotional Intelligence is the capability of individuals to recognise their own, and other people's emotions, to discriminate between different feelings and label them appropriately, to use emotional information to guide thinking and behaviour, and to manage and/or adjust emotions to adapt to environments or achieve one's goal(s) (Coleman, 2008).

As we all know, some of the most intelligent, tech savvy people are not always the most successful in life. You can have all the IT certifications or qualifications you need to land the best IT job in Melbourne but it won’t be enough on its own for you to be successful in life or keep your job. Good emotional Intelligence will help you manage stress and destructive emotions, which can have a significant negative impact on your performance, relationships, and health.

To improve your Emotional Intelligence try to take some time to reflect on your feelings and reactions. Try to think what you do when you become overly stressed. Do you lose control of your emotions and the ability to act thoughtfully and appropriately? How do you react when someone criticises you? How do you speak to people when you are under stress? Understanding your own and others’ emotions is crucial to improving emotional intelligence and your own well-being.

Ask for feedback from a friend or someone you trust, or get a mentor. Knowing other people's perception of you can help you improve future interactions.

Identifying your own emotions and feelings will help you to become more mindful about your reactions and working on them will improve your life overall.
