Interviews are the first and most crucial step in getting the position you want. You’re given roughly 30 minutes or less to prove to your possible future employer that you’re worthy of their time and money. Sound intimidating? Here are eight interview tips and tricks to help you through your next interview:
Tip One: First and most importantly, knowledge is power. Do your research about the company, it’s objectives and the people in charge. Not only will you be more prepared for the questions they could ask you about their company, you are able to tailor your skills to match what they’re looking for.
Tip Two: Get ready. Assemble an outfit and all documents before the day of the interview so you don’t miss or have anything to worry about on the day. You’re prepared.
Tip Three. Arrive on time (this means early). Five minutes early is on time, on time is late, and 5 minutes late is unacceptable. This is the first thing your interviewer will look at while it shows a lot about you, whether you care to be on time or you were stuck in traffic, your ability to get to the interview on time matters.
Tip Four. Now it’s time for the interview. It’s important to maintain eye contact. Maintaining eye contact not only shows confidence, but interest. Let the interviewer know that you’re determined to get this job.
Tip Five: One of the most commonly asked questions in an interview is to expose your weaknesses. The best thing to do in this situation is to lay it all on the line. Be honest, think about what you could work on and explain how you’re overcoming that weakness. They’ll respect you for it and honesty goes a long way.
Tip Six: Ask good questions. Even better, ask questions that let them know something else about you. Asking intelligent questions shows that you’ve done your research and thought about what it would mean to be a part of their team.
Tip Seven: Conclude the interview with a bang as it’s starting come to an end. Now is the time to show you’re completely intent on getting this job. Ask the scary question, “Have I said anything in this interview or given you any other reason to doubt that I’m a good fit for this role?” Asking this gives you the opportunity to clear up anything the interviewer may have thought was off or made you seem unfit for the role.
Tip Eight: Last but not least is a thank you note. Within 24 hours of the interview, it is most important to send a simple thank you email for their time and consideration.
